PEG 400 (Polyethylene Glycol 400) is a clear, colorless, viscous, hygroscopic liquid with a faint characteristic odor and a slightly bitter taste. It is a low-molecular-weight polymer of ethylene oxide with an average molecular weight of approximately 400 g/mol. PEG 400 is miscible with water, alcohols, acetone, and many organic solvents and exhibits excellent solvent, humectant, lubricant, and plasticizing properties. It is widely used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, personal care, food, and industrial formulations as a solvent, vehicle, plasticizer, lubricant, humectant, and viscosity-modifying agent. PEG 400 complies with IP, BP, USP, and Ph. Eur. standards when manufactured to the appropriate pharmacopeial grade.
